US Open Windsurfing Regatta --
E.M. Marketing press release:
E.M. Marketing has exciting news about Corpus Christi's annual windsurfing regatta -- U.S. Cellular! Thanks to the new sponsor, the U.S. Cellular US Open Windsurfing Regatta blows back into Corpus Christi in full force! In its 12th year, the event is stronger and better than ever, with exciting new features and strong community support. The event will again be held at Oleander Point on May 27-31. U.S. Cellular is equally excited to announce their involvement in one of the most nationally recognized events in South Texas. Head quartered in Chicago, U.S. Cellular provides wireless service to more than two million customers in 143 markets, and strives to provide simple, personal and affordable wireless communication. By offering services that are relevant to the consumer and building relationships with their customers, U.S. Cellular reported an amazing 56% increase in its customer base in 1998. The U.S. Cellular US Open is not only a show of appreciation, but also serves as a continued effort to build on the customer relationships that U.S. Cellular recognizes as the key to their success. Doug Aherns, area general manager for the company, commented, “it's our goal to form a long-term association with the regatta event. By sponsoring this event in Corpus Christi we will be giving back something to the communities that we serve.” The U.S. Cellular US Open Windsurfing Regatta will feature professional and amateur competitors from across the nation as well as some of the best windsurfers in the country. These include Kevin and Matt Pritchard, Phil McGain, Mike Gebhardt, and Jimmy Diaz. The U.S. Cellular US Open Windsurfing Regatta is a free and wheelchair accessible event welcoming competitors, spectators, family and friends for a week of competition, fun and the opportunity to claim the prestigious title of the U.S. Cellular US Open Champion which is also a qualifier for the USWA national Championship. In addition to the four days of highly competitive racing, the event will also feature a Boy Scout Boardsailing Mini Camp, parties, music, free giveaways, free skin cancer screenings, a kite sailing exhibition, kayaking demonstration, good food, and a lot of fun! The Boy Scout Boardsailing Mini Camp is presented by Whataburger, Inc., and will provide basic introductory lessons and activities for the Boy Scouts and Venturers to earn their Whataburger Boardsailing activity patch. The Scouts will learn boardsailing basics, have the opportunity to meet world class athletes, and enter a essay/photo/art contest for special prizes and awards. The Corpus Christi Windsurfing Association will work closely with the Scouts at the Mini Camp and will provide on-going support of the program throughout the year. The Mini Camp will be held Saturday and Sunday (May 29-30) with the scouts receiving their badges at an awards ceremony Sunday evening. The U.S. Cellular US Open Windsurfing Regatta continues in Corpus Christi because of the support of U.S. Cellular, PEPSI, Whataburger Inc., Continental Airlines, Orthopedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Associates Inc., Bassett Boards, and NeilPryde.
